Naomi Kubota Lee
Artists Statement
Some of my abstract paintings have been interpreted as visualizing the micro world of molecular orbits or synapsis – perhaps looking within or looking at what we, and the earth, are made of – stardust. Yet facing the expanding sky at night, they can be interpreted as an astronomer’s grand view – the ever-expanding universe, full of orbits of planets, moons and galaxies, in black space. The reoccurring theme of circles or “orbits” are universal symbols spanning cultures and across time.
My paintings are energized with saturated and transparent colors, creating a sense of depth as paint is layered, sometimes textured, which creates visual dimensionality. Colors used in this way are delicious; their limitless possibilities, interactions and complexities create a sense of mystery, mood and atmosphere.
